It told of how Ice cube ended up parting on bad terms with 'Ruthless' productions (Dre, Eazy E) they even brought up historic moments suchĪs Rodney King, and major LA city riot crisis. Hip-hop rap (ala "kid n' play", Kool Mo Dee, Fresh Prince Wil Smith, etc.) were still on the scene. How they help heightened and bring along an entirely new brand style of rap (gangsta rap) when at the time the lesser "fun" toned Egos, contract disputes, How they were being pursued and forced to have their music lyrics censored. The movie pretty much displays some of their true to life details of how the group tried to stay together when outside (and inside) forces attempt how it was decided what would be their format,Īpproach and style, how they would come to form their identity, who would be the lead singers, what they had to endure from FCC, and tales of their ownīrutal encounter with corrupted local law enforcement, I thought about the irony timing to which controversial law enforcement seems frequently World and eventually Hollywood movies, I was already clued in how the group was created and formed. ' Compton' was already very intriguing to me because I followed the group and a couple of the artists who later became very popular in the hip hop In the mid-1980s and who created, developed, and revolutionize Hip Hop culture with their very controversial music in the form of 'gangsta' rapĪnd also presenting the tales of life in the 'hood. Straight Outta Compton tells of the controversial group NWA that emerges from the rough urban streets of Compton in Los Angeles, California In the film, but "Straight out of Compton " impressed me such as easily being one of the best films I've seen this year. Maybe it's bias on my part because I followed the group and the artists that are portrayed I found it riveting, relentless and and at times edgy. Rating: R (Language Throughout|Drug Use|Strong Sexuality/Nudity|Violence) Dre (Corey Hawkins), Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren navigate their way through the industry, acquiring fame, fortune and a place in history. With guidance from veteran manager Jerry Heller, band members Ice Cube (O'Shea Jackson Jr.), Dr. N.W.A's first studio album, "Straight Outta Compton," stirs controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in Southern Los Angeles. Movies like Hustle And Flow, Juice, Belly and all the early Spike Lee joints, especially Do The Right Thing, which, like Breakin’, was a huge influencer in the early days of hip hop culture that didn't make it on to this list and easily could have been included. In 1988, a groundbreaking new group revolutionizes music and pop culture, changing and influencing hip-hop forever. There are a ton more movies that are worth any hip hop and movie fan's time. It helped launched Chris Rock’s career and stars a great cast that includes a ton of cameos from big hip hop stars like Ice-T, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and Flavor Flav. Sure, it pulled some punches and didn’t hit as hard as it could have at times and maybe hit too close to home for some hip hop stars liking, but there is no doubt that with this satirical take on the whole genre, hip hop was a part of mainstream pop culture and would be forever.ĬB4, like it’s rock n roll cousin This Is Spinal Tap, is shot mockumentary-style and follows the up and coming rappers Albert, Euripides, and Otis as they seize on the gangsta drug culture that plagues their neighborhood, stealing the identity of a local hustler and criminal and “inventing” gangsta rap, right down to Eazy-E’s iconic style. CB4 is a comedic masterpiece, despite what any critic might say about it. In 1993, a young Chris Rock wrote what would become hip hop’s answer to This Is Spinal Tap. Breakin’ is a major reason hip hop exploded out of the cities and into mainstream culture. For many in Generation X, it was their first exposure to the genre and it had a huge impact on them. Hip Hop still wasn’t anywhere near the mainstream, but Breakin’ turned into a surprise hit, especially with middle school white kids in the suburbs. Run-DMC’s first album had just been released a couple months before Breakin’ came out. To understand how important it was, you have to put yourself back in 1984. Breakin’ is the story of a “serious” dancer that becomes obsessed with breakdancing, leaves her training for the streets, and eventually leads herself and her two friends in a routine that wins a dance competition. And that’s kinda the only reason it’s on the list, because, frankly, the plot is silly and the acting is average at best. Okay, so Breakin’ isn’t EXACTLY about hip hop music, but its impact on the spread and mainstreaming of hip hop culture was so profound, it warrants making this list.
